Internet Gem: Something About Us

In one of my posts a few months ago I acknowledged the wonderful power of the Internet and it's almost miraculous power to excavate many precious gems. It may be a very humorous picture, a motivational article, a tear jerking video etc. It can be absolutely anything.

So for that reason I welcome a new segment to MIKEZ WORLD: Internet Gems. Whenever I stumble across anything amazing on the Internet and I feel like sharing it I'll post it here.

So to commemorate one of my favourite albums reaching it's 10 year anniversary here is what I feel is an Internet gem.

If you do not know I am a

DAFT PUNK FAN!

I'm not even going to go into why I think their music is out of this world. I'd be here writing for days. But my favourite album of theirs is entitled 'Discovery' and it was released in 2001. And my favourite song on the album and favourite song full stop is 'Something About Us'. I was derided many times in Secondary School for liking such a song. But after 10 years it has withstood the test of time and I still have the same feeling every time I listen to it. There are a whole host of covers that I have viewed on YouTube but in my opinion this is one of the best:

Can Someone Answer This Question For Me?

I've been trying to answer this question for a while now. Still no luck.

I think the song is amazing. So simple but yet it manages to capture a feeling many people would struggle to put into words let alone making it into a song. Absolutely love the video.

11 Songs That Will Definitely Make You Fall Into A Downward Spiral Of Depression If Kept On Repeat After A Breakup

I love music, I love it, I love it, I love it. Doesn't matter what genre it is, as long as I like it thats all that matters which is why I was heavily into Empire of The Sun last year. But this isn't about my love of music and what it means to me, although I'm sure that post is coming soon. Now because I love music so much it is constantly playing in my room so when my zombie of a phone does actually ring I'm usually met with the callous utterance "Can you turn down your music please! Gosh your such a freak." Don't these people understand that when I'm told to turn down MY music it is akin to asking me to stab myself in the heart? I DON'T CARE IF IT IS LOUD, I LOVE IT! In secondary school I used to flip out like the guy in 'There's Something About Mary' whenever anyone even came near to my headphones. People had to first get my attention and then have my permission to carefully remove my headphones, say what they needed to say, and then carefully slot them back into my ears. That's how seriously I took music. Anti-social I know but I had serious issues as a teenager and music was my only form of escapism.

Anyway, back to the reason for this post. Recently I have noticed a trend when I'm on the phone to my friends and they say "Why are you playing that song? It sounds so depressing. Long gone are the days (16/TONYA- if you don't know read my old posts) when I listened to music and it got me depressed over someone that I couldn't have. But I'll take inspiration for me to share music to the world in whatever form it may come. So here are 10 songs that if left on repeat will leave you in a deranged state after you have just been broken up with...

1) Brian McKnight - Anytime

2) Kem - I Can't Stop Loving You

3) Eric Roberson - Pen Just Cries Away

4) Usher - You Got It Bad

5) Daft Punk - Something About Us

6) Floetry - Hey You

7) Erykah Badu - Green Eyes

8) Shai - If I Ever Fall In Love

9) Jill Scott - Cross My Mind

10) Andre 3000 - She Lives In My Lap

11) Musiq - Halfcrazy

12) Ok I lied there is one last song guaranteed to tip you over the edge to insanity, but its not a definitive song I can simply place in this list. The last song is "your song". Whatever song which belonged to you and the person you split from, you know "your song". For me it used to be Maroon 5 - Sunday Morning and that's not even a depressing song...and that's the point. Nothing can bring forth stronger memories or emotions than this last song. So be careful, I don't need to be the catalyst for people being institutionalised. Although these songs are depressing and do put you into a kind of melancholy state I truly believe that songs like these also help you to heal. Through all the pain, regardless of whether you acknowledge it or not, you are simultaneously healing.

C'est la vie.

Back In The Day Record Of The Week

I know some people may raise eyebrows when it comes to my selection for this week. But its just not all about Candy. Cameo had some decent tunes. Although the video is very camp it is still jokes.

Cameo - Back and Forth

Because I could not directly embed the previous video onto my blog I'll select another BIDROW.

To commemorate Whitney Houston's return to music I'm posting a classic.

Forget Me Nots Record Of The Week

Hey People

As I sit here on holiday trying to catch up with the massive amount of reading I have to do with VH1 Soul on in the background somehow making the task less laborious (Between ESPN and NFL Network, they are the only channels I watch nowadays) as usual my mind begins to race and I feel like writing. You're probably wondering:

"So if this is the case, why doesn't he f***ing blog more frequently?"

I know I always seem to have some sort of excuse but my mistress (my beautiful HP laptop, what can I say I'm a PC) is currently out of commission so I have to keep resorting to using my wifey (my ipod Touch) for any Internet related task. And anyone who has an iphone/touch knows it is not the one for typing.

Although there are other laptops around me they are so inferior that it makes even writing the simplest blog post a herculean task.

Anyway enough with the excuses, since I'm restless and I have been watching VH1 Soul Stage for like the last 5 hours I thought I'd hit you with a classic. Since it is Joe who is currently occupying the stage; I suddenly remembered how much I liked his music.

I remember my relationship to my girlfriend in year 9 which only lasted 3 weeks, I was young and dumb, who as an act of romance left an acapella medley on my voicemail for me to hear when I got back from school. I don't remember every song she took excerpts from but the one I do remember was Joe's - 'I Wanna Know'. She could really sing and I used to listen to it everyday until I forgot to save it as T-mobile deleted voice mails after 3 days in them days.

Although this is not my FMNROW, it does bring back pleasant memories. Joe is currently performing 'Stutter' which I personally feel is one of his best songs. But he is performing the remix version which I feel pales in comparison to the original.

So here it is, Joe - 'Stutter'

DAYUUUM.....Maxwell and Kerry

So I'm sitting here on holiday just relaxing watching my favourite channel - VH1 Soul (Seriously they need this back home) and the new Maxwell video comes on.

Now I knew Maxwell knew what being sexy was but after seeing this video he seriously took it to another level. Now I'm a big Maxwell fan and I am so glad he has finally returned. I have heard nothing but good things about his new album 'Black Summers' Night' and along with another 50 other albums I have missed out on from my other favourite neo-soul artists and I need to hurry up and listen to it properly.

Now usually when I am with a female I like and I want to set the mood I play a specific playlist and the first song is always Maxwell - Til' The Cops Come Knocking. But after seeing this video I think this song will have to take the top spot.

The video is just too SEXY. You'll understand when you watch it. I mean I want to marry Kerry Washington right now. Who knew she had it in her?

So here it is, Maxwell - Bad Habits

Forget Me Nots- Back In The Day Record Of The Week

I know certain people will only know this next group for one song. But Bell Biv DeVoe had much more good songs than just 'Poison'.

Most of you may not even know the song, or may know it as a cover from someone else. The proper video is on youtube right here but I wasn't allowed to embed it directly.

This tune has been on repeat on my ipod for the last few nights and I still cannot get enough of it.

So here it is, Bel Biv DeVoe - When Will I See You Smile Again

Mrs International.

Really feeling this tune and the eye candy on display is just amazing....

............... Is The Best

So here is Drake's video for The Best I Ever Had.

TBH I think the video has nothing to do with the song but it was directed by my boi Kanyeezy so you can't be too disappointed. Although the video does make use of a lot of sexual innuendos and multiple close up shots of bouncing boobies.

I'm really looking forward to Drake's Album and hopefully he can build upon the hype and success of So Far Gone.

But this is the Drake tune I'm really feeling at the moment:

BASHY IS SICK!!!

So I read a couple of other Blogs and from time to time I pop over to Bashy's word press blog and see what he is saying. I'm a big fan of his and I think he has what it takes to BLOW.

Anyway my housemate came to me the other day saying how there's a rumour Bashy got rushed and he put a pic up on his blog to confirm it:

Like other people I was kinda sceptical as to if the picture was real. I mean it does look very convincing but on closer inspection there isn't enough swelling if Bashy really did get touched like that. Bashy was very silent on the matter, not responding to people commenting on his blog and only leaving a cryptic saying by Ghandi.

So I thought I'd leave it and see what happens.

So I woke up this morning and came along this video................

It all became apparent. The pic was like a promo for his new video which you clearly see has Bashy sporting the same injuries as in the picture. The video also has another 2 artists I rate highly, Wretch and Scorcher. It's entitled Ransom Part 1, so I think it's safe to assume there might be another couple of videos being released.

Have to rate Bashy for this one man. I like artists that can push the boundaries and just do things differently. Gotta commend him on his originality. And the video looks very professional as well, just shows certain man are moving up the industry ladder.

Bashy's Album: Catch Me If You Can is released on June 1st. Might have to go buy myself a copy still.

DRIZZY......................SO FAR GONE

So a couple of months ago I was sitting chilling in the pool room. Just talking to some people on FB chat like everyone else does.

Out of nowhere my friend Alexis pops up and starts screaming and raving about some guy called Drake.

I was like Drake who?

She then went on about how he's a signing to Weezy's cash money records and he released a new mixtape. A rapper and a vocalist she said. I immediately had my doubts because I'm sceptical of new musicians especially people trying to be more than one thing. But I'll give everyone a chance.

So I listened to the mixtape, and what else could I say??

IT WAS NANG, SICK, OUT OF THIS WORLD, IT WAS JUST..........................SO FAR GONE.

Had it on repeat for a good month but then I forgot about him until I saw this on Julie's Blog..

And then I was like, sheeeet, its Drake. And I thought I would share his music with you. Listen to it!!! Link below.

DRAKE - SO FAR GONE

And here is his Myspace if you're interested:

Forget Me Nots- Back In The Day Record Of The Week #3

I've got a real classic for you guys this week.

Probably one of the most underrated and greatest UK soul singers we have ever had. And the song I have for you today is his most succesful track.

Lynden David Hall - Sexy Cinderella.

In October 2003, Hall was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma; he died on 14 February 2006, at the age of 31, from complications resulting from the stem cell transplant he received in January 2005. Lynden was in remission at the time of his death.

RIP Lynden David Hall, You're music will surely live on.....................

Forget Me Nots- Back In The Day Record Of The Week #2

Oh My Dayz............................ I'm really going to bring back a lot of memories with this one. This is an Old Skool Garage Classic. I mean SHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET. Do I know my music or do I know my music? I know when you listen to the song you're gonna be like "that was my TUUUUUUUUUNE!"

Any way for your listening pleasure here's MJ Cole - Crazy Love.
I tried to get the original video for you but youtube would not let me embed the actual video. But you can just go there yourself and watch the actual video to bring bakc even more memories. But the live performance is not bad at all.

ENJOY......................

Forget Me Nots- Back In The Day Record Of The Week

This will be a recurring element on my page amongst other things. Now you know I Love music. Me and music have had a love affair that has spanned almost a decade now and although we've been through some rough patches we're as strong as ever.

She's down for me and I'm down for her!!

So every week I will be searching my extensive music data banks and bringing back the tunes and Da Jams form back in the day that you should never forget.

So my first Forget Me Not will actually be Forget Me Nots by Patrice Rushen. This infectious tune was released in the early 1980's and was a dance floor hit. Some of you may recognise the beat from the Will Smith song- Men In Black- which was the title song for the soundtrack for the movie Men In Black which was a Box Office Smash.

So here is my first B.I.D.R.O.W (Back In the Day Record Of the Week)
Patrice Rushen with Forget Me Nots.
